The Rivalry that Binds Us
There are few things more dramatic — or poetic — as watching a sporting event, rooting for competitors as they enter a contest that pushes them to their physical limits as much it challenges their mental fortitude.
There’s no denying the unifying influence sports has over all us. More than exhibiting athleticism and skill, most of us look forward to seeing how athletes show and maintain character, courage, and composure in the face of overwhelming circumstances. There are few things more dramatic—or poetic—as watching a sporting event, rooting for competitors as they enter a contest that pushes them to their physical limits as much it challenges their mental fortitude. In many respects, it is history unfolding before our very eyes, and what could be more exciting than actually witnessing it as it happens?
There’s nothing that fuels this fire and fascination more than a good rivalry. And in the storied annals of our de facto national sport, basketball, the one between the Ateneo Blue Eagles and the De La Salle Green Archers remains the most popular and enduring.
The birth of the competitive tension between these two esteemed universities could be traced back to when both teams were still in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). During the NCAA’s 16th season in 1939, the first-ever championship game took place between the two, and the rest, as they say, is history. Since then, association to the colors green and blue has forever been linked to La Salle and Ateneo, respectively.
Without a doubt, the battles fought between the colleges over the years have been heated, to say the least. From the alumni to avid fans of each school all over the nation, they’ve called each other names and even engaged in a fist fight or two. But at the end of the day, both Ateneo and La Salle know that it’s all in the name of passion, competition, and the will to bring pride and joy to their alma mater.
Today is another important date in sports history as the old rivals face off yet again in a final match that would determine who would take home the coveted University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Men’s Basketball Championship Season 80. We will undoubtedly be seeing modern-day warriors laying it all on the line on the basketball courts once again, all for the glory of their schools.
